FAQ – Solid Timber Decking Supply and Installation in Perth
Q. Compared to other types of timber decking, what’s special about this product?
Solid timber decking or hardwood timber decking by Hurford is an organic range that is free of sapwood (the portion prone to insect attack), therefore eliminating the need for chemical treatment. This makes the product very safe especially for naturally-conscious builders and for owners who’d like to reduce their carbon footprint.
Q. How is organic solid timber decking created?
Rather than organic boards being created or manufactured, Hurford’s organic decking gets its title by carefully selecting sap-free hardwood to create its collection. Part of their meticulous elimination process is to only select wood with the highest Natural Durability rating of Class 1, making the product very durable despite no chemical preservatives.
Q. How long can organic hardwood decking last?
Class 1 Above Ground and Naturally Termite Resistant boards are expected to last for more than 40 years. Just in time for another generation to make upgrades or for a complete turnover!
Q. What types of timber species are available?
Locally sourced from Australia, the organic hardwood boards come from Ironbark, Eucalyptus, Spotted Gum (QLD), Spotted Gum (NSW) and many more.
Q. What colours are available?
Ironbark and Eucalyptus range from heartwood pale brown to dark chocolate brown as well as dark red. Spotted Gum (QLD) is available in heartwood pale to dark brown to dark chocolate with some reddish tinges. Spotted Gum (NSW) is available in heartwood pale to dark brown to dark chocolate with some olive green to reddish tinges.
Q. What hardwood sizes are available?
We stock a very wide range of organic solid timber from 42mm x 19, mm (smallest in screening) and 64mm x 19mm (smallest in decking) to 42mm x 42mm (largest in screening) and 132mm x 20mm (largest in decking). To see how these boards fit in different types of installations, please schedule a visit to our Perth showroom by calling (08) 9331 5004.
Q. Is there a particular type of installation required for organic solid timber decking?
Hurfords’ organic timber boards come with drilling tips that require no pre-drilling on your end to fit or to fasten your boards with stainless steel.
Q. How do I maintain these organic boards?
Since organic solid timber decking is not treated with any chemicals, uncoated timber may change colour after a few years due to Australia’s high UV rating. To rejuvenate your outdoor decking, you can re-sand the boards and add decking oil to bring back their colour. Otherwise, regular sweeping and damp mopping will help clean and refresh your boards.
Q. Where else can I use this organic hardwood?
There are many applications to solid timber decking aside from flooring and screening. These boards can also be used to make outdoor furniture and storage as well as raised garden beds and fences.
